How to Add a Watermark to a PDF
ZenBuild's PDF editor lets you add customizable text watermarks to any PDF. Open your document, configure watermark text and opacity in the Tools drawer, and download the branded result.
Step-by-step guide
Open your PDF in the editor
Go to Edit PDF and upload your document. Drag the file onto the drop area or click to browse. The editor loads the document with a thumbnail sidebar on the left and a full canvas view in the center.
Open the Tools drawer and configure your watermark
Click the 'Tools' button in the top toolbar to open the Tools drawer on the right. Expand the 'Watermark' section. Enter your watermark text (e.g., 'CONFIDENTIAL', 'DRAFT', your company name) and adjust the opacity slider to control visibility. Click 'Apply Watermark' to stamp every page.
Download the watermarked PDF
The watermark is applied to all pages. Click the Download button in the toolbar to save the watermarked PDF. The processing happens in your browser — your files are never uploaded to a server.

Tips
- Use low opacity (15-30%) for watermarks that need to be visible but not distracting
- Diagonal watermarks are harder to crop out and cover more of the page
- Combine watermarking with encryption for maximum document protection
- Use 'DRAFT' watermarks on documents under review to prevent premature distribution
- For image watermarks or logos, use the PDF editor's image tool to place them on the canvas
Frequently asked questions
Is the watermark applied to every page?
Yes. The watermark is applied consistently to all pages in the document. For selective watermarking, split the PDF first, watermark specific pages, then merge them back together.
Can watermarks be removed?
Text watermarks added by this tool are embedded in the PDF. While they make unauthorized use more difficult, determined users may be able to remove them. For stronger protection, combine watermarking with encryption.
Can I add a custom font?
The tool supports standard fonts with full control over size, color, and opacity. Custom font uploads are not currently supported.
